A civil trial for financial fraud begins on Monday in New York against former US President Donald Trump and his two eldest sons. New York judge Arthur Engoron had already declared Trump guilty last Tuesday of having inflated the assets of his real estate empire over the years and thereby committing “fraud.” In doing so, Engoron anticipated an important decision as to how this is possible in such proceedings.
A central question will now be how high the fine against Trump will be. The Attorney General of the US State of New York, Letitia James, is demanding a penalty of $250 million (237 million euros) against Trump and his family holding company. She also wants the ex-president and his two eldest sons, Donald Junior and Eric, no longer to be allowed to run companies in the US state. James sued Trump and his family in September 2022.
