The catastrophic August flood wave that tore through the Nepal-China border, claiming at least 1,300 lives and leaving over 5,000 missing, was driven by a complex cascade of environmental factors heavily amplified by human-caused climate change, according to an extensive scientific analysis released by the World Weather Attribution network.

On August 26, the fragile equilibrium of the Himalayas fractured. A colossal chunk of mountain rock and glacier ice, measuring approximately 2,000 feet wide, sheared off the Langtang Lirung mountain. Plummeting roughly 7,000 feet into the river below, the impact released energy equivalent to a magnitude 5.2 earthquake.
The sheer velocity of the descent was staggering. Jeffrey Kargel, a senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute, noted that the resulting torrent of water, pulverized ice, and rock “descended the first 22 kilometers (13.7 miles) at an average speed of 193 kilometers per hour (120 mph).” This meant the lethal wave covered nearly 14 miles in less than seven minutes, obliterating towns, roads, and bridges in narrow mountain gorges.

The mountain may have been structurally preconditioned for collapse following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in April 2015. According to the analysis by more than 20 international experts, the region’s annual temperatures have climbed by roughly 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit), far outpacing global averages. Furthermore, rising temperatures are pushing the zero-degree line upward by more than 320 feet per decade, destabilizing the high-altitude permafrost that acts as a natural binding agent for mountain slopes.
“Thawing permafrost reduces the rock strength and allows more water to penetrate into the slope,” explained Walter Immerzeel, a mountain hydrologist at Utrecht University. This structural weakening was compounded by exceptional snowfall patterns the previous autumn, followed by the local area’s warmest July and August on record, generating immense volumes of meltwater.

The disaster highlights a terrifying reality for the nearly 2 million people living downstream from the Hindu Kush Himalaya region.
