Co-government vs opposition: the new crack in JxC

We must recognize their will. For these days and hours, Together for Change continues to try to show public signs of unity, while internally the ex coalition is worn out in a kind of autonomous federations of competing interests.

A continuous series of paradoxes fuel the partitions. The electoral defeat in October, the obtaining of a record number of governorships, the positions regarding the runoff, the victory of Javier Milei and the Acassuso Pact have posed to JxC labyrinthine challenges. And he can’t find the way out.

The most recent was crudely expressed at Tuesday’s summit of governors and legislators. Fittingly, a final statement laid out for the umpteenth time the supposed unity above all else.

The governors of Together for Change.

But it was inevitable, even in that text agreed upon with serious difficulties, to hint at the new crack that divides them. “We do not co-govern, but it is good that some leaders who want to help do so, because a solid government with good leaders is better than a weak government. That does not commit us or obligate us as guarantors.”

The time for translation has arrived. The majority of the JxC governors oppose the understanding of Mauricio Macri and Patricia Bullrich with Milei, which at this time includes adding leaders of the force to the future administration. The names are already known, starting with that of the former presidential candidate herself.

The provincial leaders (and many of their elected or acting legislators) claim to have the key to the negotiation with the national government, especially given the presumption of how the harsh state adjustment that Milei is preparing. “Mauricio and Patricia do not have to pay bonuses or salaries“, explains one of them in voice-over. The president-elect seemed to respond to them yesterday: “Cut other expenses and pay salaries. There’s no money”.

On the other hand, the intention to provide support and governability to a new management initially plagued by people without political experience or in the management of public matters is opposed. “Or do we want Kirchnerism to return again in four years, or less?”, argues a weighty deputy.

In that train we must understand the high pressure that a PRO sector is exerting so that Cristian Ritondo is approved by Milei to preside over the Chamber of Deputies. The version was even launched, from JxC, that Bullrich warned that she would give up being Minister of Security if Ritondo was not blessed. Most governors would prefer to avoid so much involvement: let it be in a personal capacity, goes the fashionable phrase.

Beyond any noble purpose, what is at stake is the dispute over who will have privileged access to dialogue with the incoming authorities. The magnitude of the problems to be faced requires agreements that are as basic as they are broad, especially when shock measures are announced. Negotiating each initiative, one by one, would be the gradualism that Milei denounces.

This diversity of positions in JxC also complicates Guillermo Francos. The future Minister of the Interior is the man with the most political experience in LLA and a central creator of understandings. And he finds it as difficult as possible atomization of his allies.

Given the libertarian internals, the formation of the new administration and the difficulties of the transition, Francos should also have taken note of the absence of valid interlocutors in JxC. He spoke and met privately with governors and legislators. “They have almost more quilombos than us”, they say he comments on it with a smile.

That’s why he opened the umbrella and insists that Florencio Randazzo He would be the one indicated to be in charge of the Deputies, as a sign of breadth for non-Kirchnerist Peronism and given the alleged lack of guarantees that Juntos will join Congress.

The new alliance exhibits already experienced tensions. What can help you win an election does not necessarily allow you to govern later. Those experiences were, are, traumatic.
