Abhijeet Dipke, a 31-year-old Boston University graduate and former communications strategist, has emerged as the face of youth dissent in India by founding the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The movement challenges the powerful Election Commission and has mobilized young Indians, forcing rare policy retreats from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.
Here is why that matters right now: India’s political landscape is witnessing a digital mobilization led by a generation alienated by unemployment and institutional hurdles. What started as a satirical pushback against a remark has evolved into a mass movement stretching across physical streets and digital platforms alike.
From a Remark to a 25-Million-Strong Digital Uprising
The movement traces its roots back to a striking piece of rhetoric. The president of the Supreme Court previously compared unemployed youth to cockroaches and parasites for expressing dissenting opinions and criticizing the political system. Rather than backing down, Abhijeet Dipke leaned into the label.
Operating in jeans and T-shirts, the 31-year-old launched the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) after posting a simple question on X: “And what if all the cockroaches united?” Tens of thousands of followers signed up on the very first day. The CJP now boasts more than 25 million subscribers on its Instagram account, pulling ahead of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by over 15 million followers.
But there is a catch. Dipke maintains that conventional political participation is futile under current conditions. “There is no point in turning this into a political party when elections are rigged and results are already predetermined,” he has noted of the movement’s structural philosophy.

Challenging the Establishment and Facing Arrest in New Delhi
The CJP has already proved capable of shaking the corridors of power. The movement spearheaded protests against irregularities in medical entrance exams that tragically drove some students to suicide. Those demonstrations forced the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in July, marking one of the rare retreats for Prime Minister Narendra Modi since he took office in 2014.
More recently, the CJP shifted its crosshairs to the Election Commission of India (ECI). Dipke and other opposition groups accuse the ECI of manipulating electoral roll revisions to favor the ruling BJP. This direct confrontation brought the campaign to New Delhi, where Dipke intended to lead a demonstration demanding the resignation of Election Commission head Gyanesh Kumar.
State authorities moved swiftly to neutralize the mobilization. Dipke and two other CJP leaders were intercepted and detained by police the moment they stepped off their flight in the capital.
“It’s a dictatorship,” Dipke said in a video posted to social media just minutes before police took him into custody. “We are not afraid of you. Go ahead, arrest us. Victory to Notre Mère l’Inde ! Vive la révolution !”
Securing the Capital Against the King of Cockroaches
The government’s response to the October 2026 protests highlighted sensitivity toward youth-led unrest. Delhi was placed under strict security lockdowns, with tens of thousands of police officers and paramilitary personnel deployed to prevent those who attempt to reach the main protest site from gathering.
“Modi has accepted defeat before our protest even began,” Dipke observed regarding the heavy barricades. He added that the massive crackdown on protesters and the effective locking down of Delhi “are not signs of strength, but those of a leader terrifié by his own people.”
