Colts Tight End Jelani Woods

This time I have an interesting player to offer. This year’s 3rd place is under the magnifying glassrd Round Pick Jelani Woods. A native of Ellenwood, Georgia, he began his college career as a 3-star recruit (top 25 prospect) originally as a quarterback at Oklahoma State. But during their camps, the coaches decided to move him to the tight end position. After three years with the Cowboys (not to be confused with the Dallas Cowboys) and rather moderate production, Jelani Woods announced he was moving to Virginia for his senior year.

Now you’re probably wondering, “What do I care about the 3rdrd Colts round tight end?” and I would agree with you, especially since the Colts signed Mo-Alie Cox to 3 more years this offseason. But that contract is terminable after 2022, and the other tight ends besides Jelani Woods aren’t exactly jumping off paper either, with Kylen Granson (4th Round Pick 2021), und Andrew Ogletree (6th Round Pick 2022).

So on the depth chart, he has a chance of becoming a #1 starter and #1 tight end for the Colts in years to come.

Aside from the fact that Jelani Woods just looks like a monster on the field and can do quite a bit of damage with his speed of 4.61 in the 40 yard dash, he passed the RAS test like so many other players. The Relative Athletic Score. And with a perfect one 10.

He is the only one (!) in 20 years out of 998 TEs who has managed to do this.

In a direct comparison we have Jimmy Graham, who was drafted in the 3rd round in 2010 –

Of course nobody can predict the future, but when a later 2nd bis 3rd Round pick in Dynasty Rookie Drafts, the gentleman strikes me as a small steal that not many have on their radar. Don’t expect him to break records right away in his rookie season as he is still a bit “raw” and has a long learning curve to perfect his game. But the talent is definitely there and I’ve drafted him in a few leagues.

Finally, as a treat, I would have the RAS score of all Colts rookies this year, including the Austrian Gold Star Tackle Bernhard Raimann.

We’ll see how much the RAS score ends up being worth over the years, but I think the Colts seem to take this very seriously. With an average score of 9.63, they have the best batting average in the NFL.
