With the arrival of lower temperatures, the winter respiratory virus season begins. Fever, cough, cold, headache or sore throat are common symptoms of infections in children and adults, caused by different viruses: Covid-19 but also influenza or human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Although these diseases remain mild in most cases, certain people at risk, such as frail or immunocompromised elderly people, can develop more severe forms, requiring hospitalization or even death. Covid-19 is responsible for 102 new hospitalizations in Switzerland since October 3.

RSV infection is very feared in children. This virus sends 2% of infants under 1 year old to hospital (i.e. 1000 admissions per year in Switzerland) due to breathing difficulties and feeding problems. RSV is also the second riskiest respiratory virus for older adults after the flu.
