With an activity full of magic, color and many smiles, the Force of Ideas arrived at the township of Manzanillo del Mar to celebrate Children’s Day with 350 infants from that community. The event, coordinated by the social leader Liliana Majana, through the Caribbean Leadership Thought Center, began with a recreational day and many activities full of laughter and positive messages to the children in their day.

“More than a date to celebrate, it is an opportunity to commit ourselves to the protection and full guarantee of the rights of children, from their birth in dignified conditions, through their nutrition, development, physical and mental health, education and recreation. The situation of early childhood in Cartagena represents a challenge that concerns us all”, pointed out the sports leader Dumek Turbay Paz, who also attended the event.

For Turbay, child care is a transversal issue of immediate intervention that any District government must have as a first-order policy. Adequate care in early childhood has an impact on their physical and mental health, and on their future academic performance. It creates human development, social mobility and closes inequality gaps.

According to official sources, in Cartagena there are approximately 104,263 boys and girls from 0 to 5 years old, of these, 40,489 receive early childhood services with the ICBF, and 17,000 are in preschool. According to these data, 46.28% of children from 0 to 5 years of age have not reported any type of early childhood care. The social leader Liliana Majana referred to this, also showing her concern for the situation of children in Cartagena.
“This is alarming, especially since the first years of life have been shown to have a great impact on the future of children, in their brain development, in managing emotions, their ability to learn, in their health, in indicators such as growth and development, in their well-being,” he said.
The ‘Day of childhood and recreation in Colombia’ is a celebration that highlights the role of early childhood in society. It also has the purpose of raising awareness about the protection of the rights of boys and girls in order to guarantee their harmonious and integral development.
