Compulsory vaccination of caregivers: Frank Vandenbroucke speaks

From March 7, the corona barometer changes to code yellow. This was decided by the Consultation Committee. The Covid Safe Ticket will disappear in the Horeca sector, as will the restrictions imposed on events.

It is also the end of the epidemic emergency situation and of the federal phase of the national emergency plan launched two years ago.

Does this situation mean the end of compulsory vaccination for caregivers and the end of the idea of compulsory vaccination for the rest of the population? Federal Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke (Vooruit) answered the question this afternoon.

“We have entered into a precautionary reasoning by saying that we need a device which allows an obligation of vaccination in the care sector, if necessary, but not necessarily activated immediately”, did he declare.

“This is the reason why the federal government has decided to submit a bill to the House. In this bill there is this device of obligation for all healthcare professions to be vaccinated. There is also a tentative date which is 1is July, from which the obligation is organized.”

But a mechanism that allows this date to be changed will be provided.

“Politically, we have agreed within the federal government that we will seek an opinion from the authorities (in particular the Superior Health Council) on the advisability of maintaining this obligation or not. Obviously, this obligation must serve a purpose. This must happen at the right time. It can be useful but not necessarily from 1is July. The bill makes it possible to legislate a framework, but that is not necessarily activated. We will ask for a scientific opinion, in particular also on possible scenarios for new vaccination campaigns for the entire population.
