Choose a heat and cold network in preference to individual production

It is a real urban comfort tool which, via networks, presents numerous advantages for its user:

its ease of use; control of energy costs; multi-energy development; a reduction in atmospheric emissions; preservation of the environment on aesthetic, visual and acoustic levels; increased safety through the absence of installation of combustion in the buildings served; elimination of maintenance or compliance costs linked to localized production; preventive consideration of health risks.

However, this technology still remains limited to areas with high urban density.

Connecting to a heating and cooling network is a solution for decarbonizing a building, reducing energy bills, and what’s more, using local energy. Especially since, within the framework of the tertiary decree, the owner or tenant of a so-called tertiary surface area of more than 1,000 m² is required to reduce their energy consumption by 40% by 2030.

Indeed, since January 1, 2008, the project owner of a construction operation with a new total floor area greater than 1,000 m² must carry out, before submitting the building permit, a technical and economic feasibility study of the various energy supply solutions by examining in particular the connection to a heating or cooling network, if it exists near the building site.

Who can connect to a heating or cooling network?

In theory, buildings such as individual houses can be connected to a heating network crossing their street. In reality, this possibility is mainly used to provide heating energy and domestic hot water production to large condominium or tertiary buildings. It is in fact preferable, given the importance of the investments, for there to be a large number of homes connected in order to pool and amortize fixed costs.

Indeed, unlike other energy supply solutions, the heating network requires a highly capital-intensive investment and can only be amortized over a long period (twenty years) in order to ensure a competitive price for subscribers.

Hence the need for exploratory work, called the network classification procedure, in order to provide visibility to potential investors.
