cumVoting for the parliamentary elections has ended in Bodia. Voting started at 7 am local time on Sunday and ended at 3 pm. The Cambodian People’s Party of Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has been in power for 38 years, is all but certain to win the election after the main opposition Candle Light Party was barred from running. While the main opposition party was not in the contest, the CPP contested against seventeen smaller parties.

Just before the elections, the Election Commission banned the Candlelight Party citing registration issues. The Cambodian Election Commission did not change its position despite strong protests against this, including at the international level.

Indications are that CPP will win all 125 seats in the National Assembly. Hun Sen currently holds the record for the longest-serving elected ruler in Asia. However, there is strong criticism that Sen comes to power by creating similar conditions in every election.
