Controversial Offside Decision Mars Tottenham vs Liverpool Match: PGMOL Admits Error

Tottenham won 2-1 against Liverpool not without difficulty while the Reds played part of the match with 9 against 11. Liverpool played with ten after the red card of Curtis Jones (26th), then with nine after the second yellow card received by Diogo Jota (69th). But if the meeting was talked about a lot after the final whistle, it was for an arbitration decision which could have changed the result. And even due, since the body which governs arbitration in England (PGMOL) recognizes its error.

While the scoreboard showed 0-0 and the Reds were already at 10, Luis Diaz opened the scoring. Except that his joy was short-lived since the line referee signaled him offside. The VAR then entered the dance and very quickly validated the decision. What surprised all observers of the match was that the production only offered a fixed shot used to determine whether the Colombian was offside or not, without any line being drawn. However, looking at the image, it was not a big deal and the Liverpool striker seemed to be covered by a Tottenham player. His goal should therefore have been awarded. But that’s not the case.

At the end of the meeting, while the consultants and journalists were asking each other questions on set, the PGMOL communicated about this phase and admitted that it was a “significant human error”.

“Luis Diaz’s goal was disallowed for offside by the refereeing body on the field,” we read in a press release. “This was a clear and obvious factual error which should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, but the VAR did not intervene. »

The PGMOL specifies that it will “conduct a full examination of the circumstances which led to this error”.
