Controversial Russian Goods Store in Liège Sparks Outrage: Is It Acceptable or Prohibited?

2023-12-07 07:01:00

In the center of Liège, a Russian goods store sells t-shirts displaying Vladimir Putin or the acronym “Z”, symbol of the war against Ukraine. For the Ukrainian community, this is unacceptable, and this type of trade or exhibitions should be prohibited. Information from our colleagues at the Meuse newspaper.

In a few days, this is the second time that the owner of this Russian goods store has removed hostile tags from her window. It all started with a video published on social networks at the beginning of December. It showed t-shirts bearing the image of Vladimir Putin inside and on the front the famous “Z” symbol of the military operation in Ukraine. The shopkeeper does not hide her pro-Russian feelings and even tries to be humorous.

The famous letter Z is a problem? “It’s the French alphabet, I told you, and it’s also the Z from the film Zorro. A very beautiful Z”replies the owner of the “rue de Maroseyka” store.

We should put it on the same level as the swastika

The ones this really doesn’t make fun of are the Ukrainians. “The letter “Z” is indeed the Russian army sent by Putin to Ukraine to exterminate the Ukrainians. We should absolutely remove it and put it on the same level as the swastika,” believes Helena Schapowal, Belgian of Ukrainian origin, president of “Ukrainian women” – Liège section.

In the store’s shelves, in addition to Russian dolls, Vladimir Putin is still present as well as the “Z” t-shirt. The owner has received numerous threats on social media. She has filed a complaint and plans to continue selling these controversial items. “If someone asks me and I receive the order, why not”, believes the shopkeeper.

“I regret that Liège appears on social networks as being the city which is pro-Russian, which welcomes this type of store”regrets Helena Schapowal.

The Liège police are informed of the situation. She believes that showing support for Putin and the war against Ukraine is political demonstration and is not illegal.
