“Cormanon Underpass Inaugurated: A Key Section of the TransAgglo Project for Soft Mobility”

An essential section for the TransAgglo project, the Cormanon underpass was inaugurated this Friday in Villars-Sur-Glâne. About a hundred people, including primary school classes on bicycles, were present to celebrate the end of the work.

The tunnel of 1500 tons of reinforced concrete, intended for soft mobility, allows to pass under the Cormanon road. A solution for crossing a very busy area, with daily traffic of around 20,000 vehicles.

The east exit of the tunnel, opposite Nuithonie, now houses a new public space with benches, trees and bike parks. “It’s a chance for our municipality to be able to build an alternative route which is not along the roads and which will eventually make it possible to cross the entire municipality from east to west, practically without interaction with the road network”, rejoices Bruno Marmier, syndic of Villars-Sur-Glâne. In total, the lower passage will have cost 4.6 million francs, financed by the agglomeration of Fribourg, the canton and the Confederation.

“The most important axis”

As a reminder, the TransAgglo is a 17 kilometer section linking Avry to Guin and intended for soft mobility. “This will be the most important axis of the canton to promote travel in soft mobility, notes Jean-François Steiert, State Councilor, director of construction planning, the environment and mobility. We are a canton where there are still quite a few people who travel by bike and the people who do need security. This is provided by clean lane cycling sites, like what we have here in Cormanon.”

The project of 160 million francs should be completed in 2028, but the agglomeration still faces some opposition, especially in the city center of Fribourg, which could slow down its realization, specifies all the same Jean-François Steiert.
