Corona pandemic: seven-day incidence rises to 318.7

The Robert Koch Institute registered almost 78,000 corona infections within one day – a significant increase. The reasons are probably two omicron subvariants and a lack of precautionary measures.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) registered 77,878 new corona infections within 24 hours. That is 35,185 more cases than on Friday a week ago, when 42,693 corona infections were reported. The nationwide seven-day incidence rises to 318.7 (previous day: 276.9).

According to this, 106 people died in connection with the virus. This increases the number of reported deaths since the beginning of the pandemic to 139,729.

Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a high number of corona cases not recorded by the RKI – mainly because by far not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics. In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values. In general, the number of registered new infections and deaths varies significantly from weekday to weekday, since more and more federal states do not transmit to the RKI, especially at weekends, and report their cases later in the week.

BA.4 and B.5 are spreading

According to the RKI, in the course of the spread of further omicron sublines, a renewed increase in corona infections in Germany is possible. It is expected that the subvariants BA.4 and B.5 will spread more, “so that there can be an overall increase in the number of infections and a renewed increase in infection pressure on vulnerable groups of people as early as summer,” warns the institute in its weekly report Covid-19.

Seasonal effects – which actually slow down the virus a bit – could not compensate for the spread of these variants if rules of conduct are no longer observed.
