FC Barcelona got entangled in a new mess. After the affair of the payments to an ex-referee which is causing a lot of ink to flow, Barça could receive a new blow. According to the media Relevo, the Catalans could lose their nugget Gavi freely at the end of the season. The reason ? The young Catalan’s contract, approved by the Spanish League in January, would no longer be valid.
Barça had obtained the green light from the Commercial Court to force La Liga to register their player in the first team. But this judgment was suspended due to a procedural defect because the Catalan club made its request one day after the legal deadline.
This delay of a few hours could nevertheless have serious consequences for Gavi and FC Barcelona. Indeed, if nothing changes, the player could find himself legally free at the end of the season. If he has a departure clause of one billion euros, the midfielder could therefore finally leave Catalonia for free. Which would be a huge blow financially for the club.
Lined up as a youngster until the end of the season
The file is all the more complicated for the Blaugranas, who are still in the sights of La Liga concerning the strictly Spanish rules of financial fair play. The risk is therefore of not being able to register Gavi for the next season, unless you win your case.
FC Barcelona can still appeal the decision. In the meantime, the 18-year-old can continue to be aligned until the end of the season with his youth license.
