Nouakchott hosted on Tuesday, April 25, a consultation meeting between, on the one hand, the Ministry of Petroleum, Mines and Energy as well as the Ministry of Equipment and Transport (supervision of ports) and On the other hand, oil operators, engineering & logistics service providers and the private sector.
The objective of this conference was to present to the stakeholders the project to create a zone dedicated to oil and gas activities as well as the energy projects in prospect in Mauritania.
The Mauritanian Government – through the Ministry of Petroleum, Mines and Energy and with the financial support of the World Bank – had entrusted a few months ago the feasibility study of this special zone to a Consortium of three firms specialists: EPCM Consultants (South Africa), Jade Advisory (Tunisia) and Meen&Meen (Mauritania). The Consultant’s mission is also to study the creation of such a zone dedicated to hydrocarbon activities within the framework of a public-private partnership contract (PPP) more appropriate to attract FDI.
Indeed, the recent discoveries of world-class gas fields such as GTA and Birallah represent a major opportunity for Mauritania on the path to economic development and growth. The current global energy crisis has served as a catalyst to promote the judicious exploitation of Mauritania’s hydrocarbon potential with a view to attracting investment, industrialization, job creation and prosperity.
Added to this is the global trend towards an energy transition and the decarbonisation of certain sectors with high GHG emissions; and Mauritania has adhered to the Paris Agreements and intends to pursue the achievement of Net-Zero by 2050.
Mauritania’s commitments in terms of energy transition are already reflected in its determination to develop its solar and wind potential for the production of renewable energies in order, first of all, to increase the share of its energy mix in the national mix. , and then the production of green hydrogen and steel.
Thus, the reduction of the carbon footprint remains for Mauritania an uncompromising objective for the benefit of sustainability in all sectors of activity.
The creation of this area unequivocally translates this vision of sustainability through the exploitation of natural resources for the benefit of sustainable development that respects nature and social well-being. This will firstly involve the production of clean and affordable energy that can be used to develop a viable economic-industrial fabric that will ultimately be part of a broader vision of regional economic inclusion.
Mauritania has all the assets of such an ambition of national prosperity and regional integration. Nevertheless, the fundamental conditions for achieving such objectives lie in the existence of a modern and attractive legal and regulatory framework, of a business climate which is just as attractive, as well as in the development of basic infrastructures and Capacity Building.
