One of the most recognized talented and innovative executives in Apple, Steve Hotelling is retiring from the company. According to the Bloombergthe information was confirmed by people familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity because the departure has not yet been announced by Maçã.

Hotelling has a history unlike any other within Apple, as he was directly involved in the development of very complex and widely used technologies by the company — such as the revolutionary multi-touch screen launched on the original iPhone and the Touch ID biometrics sensor.

Considered “brilliant” and a “driver of innovation” by colleagues, Hotelling was also responsible for overseeing Apple’s camera engineering team — a relevant sector in the company today — and leading depth sensing technologies for augmented reality.

With Hotelling’s imminent departure, his responsibilities are being distributed among Johny Srouji’s subordinates — who is who he reported directly to. He was at Apple for around two decades and represented the company in several cases, such as the patent dispute against Samsung.

When contacted, Apple chose not to comment on the executive’s departure.
