Cremonese eliminates Napoli from the Italian Cup

Napoli were stunned by Cremonese to crash out of the Coppa Italia in the round of 16 on penalties, 5-4, following a 2-2 draw following extra time on Tuesday.

Stanislav Lobotka was the only Napoli player to miss a penalty as Cremonese, who have not won in Serie A this season and are bottom of the standings, moved into the quarter-finals.

Cremonese surprised the hosts when they took the lead through Charles Bickle following 18 minutes, but the league leaders responded with goals from Juan Jesus and Giovanni Simeone before the break.

Despite Napoli dominating most of the second half, Cremonese snatched an equalizer in the 87th minute when Felix Avena-Gyan headed in a corner.

The visitors’ player, Leonardo Cernicola, was sent off for a second booking in extra time, but Napoli was unable to take advantage of the numerical superiority, and the match went to penalties. The Cremonese will face Jose Mourinho’s Roma in the first of February in the quarter-finals.
