Crypto Finance Group completes Swiss Franc pilot on GCUL

Crypto Finance Group Completes Swiss Franc Pilot on Google Cloud Universal Ledger

Crypto Finance Group has completed a beta pilot enabling instant account-to-account transfers between two Swiss banks using the Google Cloud Universal Ledger (GCUL), cloud.google.com reported. The three-month systems integration project connected a Swiss digital asset bank and a Swiss B2B transaction bank to test programmable, blockchain-based payment rails without abandoning core banking stability or regulatory compliance.

Banks Connect Core Systems to GCUL API Instances

The pilot architecture bypassed large Google Cloud footprints for the participant banks. Instead, the participating institutions connected their core banking systems to individual GCUL API instances via Remote Procedure Call from existing on-premise deployments. Private key material was managed through alternative solutions rather than standard cloud key management services.

Crypto Finance acted as the designated currency operator for the network. The organization connected a role admin service, a settlement registry, and a cloud key management service to a dedicated GCUL API within dedicated Google Cloud projects.

Deferred Settlement Manages Counterparty Exposure

To manage counterparty exposure without demanding high liquidity reserves for real-time gross settlement, Crypto Finance implemented deferred settlement. Transactions accumulated and offset over operational cycles, and only the net difference settled periodically.

Currency operators enforced strict issuance limits based on the credit ratings of participating banks during the pilot. This rulebook-driven configuration standardized fees, settlement times, and technical limits, contrasting sharply with public stablecoin models that rely on unmanaged bilateral agreements or automated clearinghouse default waterfalls.

Contrasting GCUL with Public Stablecoins

Unlike public stablecoins such as USDC—which public reports note can reduce traditional bank lending capacity and introduce anonymous counterparty risks or gas fees—GCUL operates strictly with commercial bank money. The infrastructure allows banks to retain reserves while providing customers with instant, stablecoin-like payment speeds.

The network utilizes a high-performance smart contract language designated as GCULpy. This programmable execution environment lays the groundwork for future capabilities, including automated foreign exchange, real-time cross-currency settlement, and dynamic collateral management using tokenized digital assets.
