Cup classic stopped after lighter hit Davy Klaassen from stands | Dutch football

The semi-final match in the KNVB Cup between Feyenoord and Ajax has been stopped by referee Allard Lindhout after Davy Klaassen was hit by a lighter from the audience in the 62nd minute. Ajax led 2-1 at that time.

Things got out of hand in De Kuip at the first whistle. The supporters of Feyenoord had set off so many fireworks that Lindhout had to temporarily stop the game after half a minute because of the smoke developments.

After that, a Classic became as a Classic should be. Both teams battled for every ball that crossed the line, but no one crossed it. Ajax took the lead through a goal from Dusan Tadic in the 14th minute. In the stoppage time of the first half, Giménez headed in. Shortly after the break, it was Klaassen who hit the target after a scrimmage and thus ensured the 1-2 lead for Ajax.

Then things went badly wrong. It started with a fight between the captains of Feyenoord (Orkun Kökcü) and Ajax (Tadic). So far, not much has happened. Then the other players got involved, but also the people in the stands. One of them decided to throw a lighter at the back of Klaassen’s head.

Heitinga then decided to take his team inside and the game is therefore halted for at least fifteen minutes.
