The company announced on Wednesday that it cannot be ruled out that data was leaked. According to current findings, this could include business, employee and customer data. According to the broadcast, customers were asked to change their access data to their “My WESTbahn” accounts as soon as possible.
A team of experts appointed by the Westbahn “immediately took steps and stopped the attack,” it said. Since the incident, the IT department has been working hard on the investigation with the help of external support in order to be even better protected against similar attacks in the future. However, the company emphasized that Westbahn itself does not process credit card data, as this is done by external payment service providers. A report has already been made to the responsible authorities, but further legal action is reserved.
Since the cyber attack could result in customer-related data being misused and those affected could inadvertently become recipients of unwanted messages – for example through spam or phishing – customers were asked to be more careful in the coming weeks. If unusual activity is detected with the customer account or those affected have questions, please visit the company’s website at westbahn.at/cyber or call the dedicated hotline +43/1/361-0366-548 for information.
Traffic was never affected and trains are currently running as planned. Tickets can be purchased as usual through all Westbahn sales channels and on the trains.
