Red Bull wants to take over the majority of the shares in the German cycling team Bora-hansgrohe. A corresponding merger notification was received by the Austrian Federal Competition Authority (BWB) at the end of December, as it announced on its website on Tuesday.

According to the information, the Salzburg group wants to take over 51 percent of RD pro cycling GmbH & Co. KG and RD Beteiligungs GmbH, the owner of the professional road cycling team Bora-hansgrohe.

The racing team, led by manager Ralph Denk, has been a member of the highest men’s road cycling league, the World Tour, since 2017. The signing of Slovenian star Primoz Roglic has caused quite a stir in recent months. The Olympic champion and winner of the Giro d’Italia had reportedly previously undergone performance tests at the Red Bull training center.

So far only individual athletes under contract

Red Bull is not yet active as the main team sponsor or owner in international road cycling. However, the group has a few top athletes under contract for head sponsorship. For example, the German Anton Palzer, who drives for Bora, the Belgian star Wout van Aert (Visma) and the Brit Tom Pidcock (Ineos) wear helmets with the Bulls logo.

The Bora racing team’s squad includes three Austrian professionals: Marco Haller, Patrick Gamper and Alexander Hajek in 2024. Bernhard Eisel and Christian Pömer work for the team as sports directors.

The application deadline for acquiring the majority shares in the Bora racing team from the BWB ends on January 26th. Until then, companies affected by the merger can contact the BWB or the Federal Cartel Attorney.
