On Saturday at nine o’clock, Nicolas Jud (26) and Smilla Anouk Berger (27) began what was probably the greatest adventure of their lives. The two young Bernese Oberlanders want to cycle 23,000 kilometers in a year and a half. Your destination: New Zealand.

“My brother lives in New Zealand and over a beer after work we joked that I would come visit him on my bike,” says Jud to 20 minutes. “We both wanted to break out of everyday life.” Half a year ago, the plan was solidified: it should be a trip around the world. “The idea stuck in my head,” says Jud.

As free as possible

They are mobile and fast enough on a bicycle, but it is still possible to explore the different places along the way. The two saved money, planned the route, read books and asked friends about their travel experiences. They calculate with a budget of 40 francs per day. “That will probably be enough,” says Jud. The two have equipped their bikes with several bags in which all their belongings for the coming years are located: clothes, tent, camping equipment. “We want to stay as free as possible, so we camp where we can,” says Jud. “We’ll also stay in a hostel, just to have a bed again and do laundry.”

Aren’t you afraid of dangerous situations abroad? “We have respect for the new,” says Jud. “There will definitely be problems or situations that are not so safe, but we take it every day.” In an emergency, they also want to visit a hostel more often or get in touch with local people via social media and platforms such as couch surfing.

Jud and Berger also collect donations through crowdfunding. “We want to be able to help local people when they need it, and in doing so also give something back to those we meet on the trip,” says Jud. On Youtube, Instagram and Tiktok, the two want to document their journey. “People should also see where the donated money goes,” he says. “My mother always told me this: give more than you take. We want to do that too.”

The journey began on Saturday, just before Jud said to 20 minutes: “We are so excited and are so pushed. It’s time we left.”
