The Department of Agriculture (DA) expects to begin the distribution of mobile solar irrigation systems by December or January, targeting a window when El Niño conditions are projected to reach their peak. Agriculture Assistant Secretary Arnel V. de Mesa reported that P1 billion from the Unified Package for Livelihoods, Industry, Food, and Transport (UPLIFT) Program will finance the deployment.
Allocation of P1 Billion for Mobile Irrigation Units
While the DA initially requested P3.5 billion from the UPLIFT Program for broader solar irrigation initiatives, Mr. de Mesa clarified that the total allocation is P3 billion. Of that amount, P1 billion is specifically earmarked for mobile systems. These units are designed to be transportable between different farm locations, offering a flexible alternative to traditional, cost-heavy diesel-powered irrigation pumps.
The distribution strategy prioritizes farmland that already possesses sustainable water sources. These systems are equipped with both sprinkler and drip irrigation modes to accommodate varying crop requirements. “These mobile solar irrigation systems are not just for rice fields. They can be used for corn, vegetables and even livestock and aquaculture,” Mr. de Mesa stated.
Safeguarding Agricultural Livelihoods
The push for solar-powered infrastructure is fundamentally tied to the long-term economic stability of the rural sector. Mr. Solidum emphasized that the objective of these interventions extends beyond crop protection to the broader recovery and income security of farmers. By reducing the reliance on expensive fossil fuels for irrigation, the government aims to lower operating expenses for agricultural producers while maintaining productivity despite the challenges posed by unpredictable weather patterns.
