Dead at 17: she had just obtained her license

The 17-year-old young woman involved in a violent face-to-face last summer in Mauricie lost her life the day after obtaining her probationary license, reveals the coroner’s inquest made public on Tuesday.

Éléonore Genest was on her way to an appointment when she was driving her 2008 Hyundai Accent on Route 153 in the municipality of Lac-aux-Sables, around 3:30 p.m. on August 9.

250 meters from chemin Saint-Alphonse, the young driver deviated from her lane, at the same time as a tractor unit carrying logs was approaching in the opposite direction.

When the truck driver applied the brakes, it was already too late. Éléonore’s vehicle hit the tractor, which then dragged it.

His death was instantaneous, writes coroner Me Sophie Regniere.

“A fire broke out between the two vehicles and quickly spread to the passenger compartment of the car, adds Sophie Régnière. After the blaze, firefighters used lifeline pliers to free Mme Genest of his car. »

Five months after the tragedy, the coroner is not able to explicitly target why the young woman has deviated from her path.

However, the inexperience of the driver should be considered. The one who left behind her parents and her two sisters had obtained her probationary driving license the day before the tragedy.

“August 9 was the first time she could drive alone,” read the coroner’s report.

We cannot rule out that Éléonore Genest, who had attention deficit disorder, was distracted by something that the police investigation could not determine.

Note that her cell phone did not contain a SIM card, so she could not text or call at this time.

The thesis of the voluntary gesture is not considered.

« Mme Genest was going through an important and stimulating stage in his life: his entry into CEGEP and his first apartment, ”reports coroner Sophie Régnière.

The death of the young woman had caused a shock wave in the municipality of Lac-aux-Sables, which has 1,300 souls.

Municipal employees, who can also act as first responders, intervened on the scene to help the victim.

“In solidarity, some people had posted a photo of a red heart on Facebook.”
