Criminals are increasingly exploiting smartphone call functions and messenger applications like Telegram or MAKS to trick victims into sharing their device screens. This real-time display sharing allows attackers to intercept sensitive financial data, view incoming SMS confirmation codes, and execute fraudulent transactions, resulting in over 50 victims defrauded primarily in an ongoing international case.
How Do Fraudsters Exploit Screen Sharing During Live Phone Calls?
Attackers initiate contact via standard calls or encrypted messenger applications under the guise of conducting customer identity verifications for banking institutions. Once the victim activates the screen-sharing function, perpetrators obtain a live feed of all active display elements.
During this active transmission, bad actors observe current account balances, complete card numbers, automatic input suggestions, and incoming one-time passwords delivered via SMS text messages. Armed with these authentication tokens, the callers execute unauthorized transactions instantly, such as a fraudulent purchase of a mobile phone valued at 1,39,999 rupees.
Who Was Arrested in the Dhanbad and Delhi Police Operation?
Indian law enforcement dismantled a segment of this fraud network following a four-day operation executed in Dhanbad. Police in Delhi apprehended two men aged 23 and 24 from Jamtara in the state of Jharkhand. Among the suspects is a university graduate holding a technical degree.
Investigators linked the two detained individuals to more than 50 separate victims. The demographic data indicates that the overwhelming majority of those targeted are over the age of 50. Authorities seized three mobile phones from the suspects during the arrests.
What Are the Warning Signs and Immediate Prevention Steps on Mobile OS Interfaces?
Smartphone operating systems provide built-in visual indicators to alert users when a display broadcast is active. iPhone users can identify an ongoing transmission by observing a red indicator light inside the Dynamic Island or a red-highlighted time field at the top of the screen.
Users can terminate the broadcast immediately by tapping this active indicator and selecting the stop function, followed by hanging up the voice call. To prevent sensitive authorization codes from appearing on the lock screen or during notifications, device owners should configure SMS preview settings to “Never” display message contents.
What Action Should Victims Take After an Unauthorized Screen Transmission?
Immediate intervention is required if an unauthorized display session has occurred. Users must contact their financial institutions instantly to block affected bank cards, terminate all active application sessions, and modify every account password.
An official report must be filed with law enforcement authorities within 24 hours of discovering the breach to document the unauthorized transactions and initiate formal recovery procedures.
