Kansas voters elected Democrat Adam Hamilton to the U.S, according to KCUR. Senate on November 3, 2026, marking the first time the state has chosen a Democrat for the chamber since 1932.
Hamilton defeated incumbent Republican Senator Roger Marshall by five points, according to The Associated Press. The victory unfolded in a state that Donald Trump carried by more than 16 points in 2024, as reported by Newsweek.
President Donald Trump won Kansas with a double-digit margin in each presidential election since 2016, and he made two visits to the state to support Marshall, alongside two stops by Vice President JD Vance. Prior to the election, former Democratic governors Laura Kelly and Kathleen Sebelius endorsed Hamilton, as did most living former governors except for Sam Brownback, who endorsed Marshall.
As the pastor of the largest United Methodist church in the country, with seven campuses across the Kansas City metro area, Hamilton campaigned on a moderate approach and emphasized listening to both sides.
He won in part by flipping six counties that backed Trump in 2024 and Marshall in 2020. Ahead of the vote, the Cook Political Report rated the race a toss-up, while the Legis1 polling average based on 35 polls showed Hamilton at 49.9 percent and Marshall at 45.6 percent.
Appearing on NBC News’ Meet the Press, Hamilton cautioned his party against interpreting the midterm results as a broad endorsement of the Democratic brand. He warned that the new congressional majority could be short-lived if lawmakers fail to address cost-of-living pressures immediately.

Hamilton also stated that he would be deeply disappointed if his first two years in office were consumed by investigations into Donald Trump. Instead, he urged Congress to prioritize ending the war in Iran and rolling back tariffs, according to NBC News.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., agreed with those priorities during a separate appearance on Meet the Press, noting that Congress cannot spend all its time investigating the administration.
The campaign in Kansas broke fundraising records, with Hamilton bringing in $19.18 million in total receipts compared to Marshall’s $7.55 million, according to financial disclosures cited by Legis1. Voters across the state pointed to the economy, democracy, and immigration as the top issues influencing their ballots in the AP Voter Poll reported by SBS.
