Demonstrations against the vaccine pass, record cases in Mexico … Update on the pandemic

While the government is still hoping for the entry into force of the law transforming the health pass into a vaccination pass on January 15, opponents gave their voice this weekend. The Interior Ministry announced 105,200 participants across France – a level of mobilization comparable to that of this summer. In the capital, several thousand people were present. For its part, the executive announced “a plan to strengthen” testing capacities with, in particular, the deployment of “several hundred” screening centers. Elsewhere in the world, the Covid-19 continues to progress. In Africa, the number of contaminations exceeds 10 million.

  • Rebound in demonstrations against the vaccine pass

“Macron, fuck you!” : A few days after the shattering declarations of Emmanuel Macron, decided to “piss off” the unvaccinated, the latter and the opponents of the vaccination pass hit the pavement on Saturday in several cities in France, reviving large-scale mobilizations. The Interior Ministry announced 105,200 participants throughout France, four times more than the 25,500 of the previous mobilization on December 18. In Paris, the most important demonstration brought together several thousand people at the call of the Patriots of the pro-Frexit presidential candidate Florian Philippot, regaining the level of the mobilizations of this summer, when the health pass was announced.

“Macron, your pass we do not want”, “Do not touch the children” chanted the demonstrators, many of whom were wearing a French flag, in the middle of a few fleur-de-lis. The demonstration, which started from the Place du Palais royal, took on Place Vauban in the style of a political meeting, with several far-right personalities coming to support the demonstrators: via video message, Marine Le Pen’s niece, Marion Maréchal, the very conservative Jean -Frédéric Poisson, support of Eric Zemmour, or former adviser to Donald Trump Steve Bannon.

  • Vaccination pass: 2nd round in the Senate dominated by the right

The few days of break since the eventful adoption by the deputies of the vaccination pass will they have appeased the spirits? Response at the beginning of the week to the Senate, with a right-wing majority, which will examine the bill on Monday in committee, then on Tuesday in the hemicycle. Despite the delay in the initial schedule, due to the delay at the Palais Bourbon, the government is still hoping for the entry into force of the law transforming the health pass into a vaccination pass on January 15.

Those over 12 will then need to be able to prove their vaccination status to access leisure activities, restaurants and bars, fairs or interregional public transport. A negative test will no longer suffice, except for access to health establishments and services. For Prime Minister Jean Castex, the objective is clear: to push further for vaccination, in an unprecedented epidemic situation while the daily average of new infections over seven days is beating record after record.

  • Gabriel Attal announces “plan to strengthen” testing capacities

Government spokesman Gabriel Attal announced to BFMTV on Sunday “a plan to strengthen our testing policy” in the face of the Covid-19 epidemic, including the deployment of “several hundred” testing centers near vaccination centers. “Almost 10 million people” are tested per week, but the queues are getting longer, admitted Gabriel Attal, indicating that “we (were going) to increase the number of testing centers”.

“We are going to ask for the opening of screening centers near the vaccination centers”, so that at low vaccination times, the professionals on the spot can perform tests, said the spokesperson for the government. “The second measure is to allow pharmacists to create their screening centers. We will give them the possibility of recruiting themselves temporarily health professionals who will come to work in their own small screening center so that there is more screenings done in pharmacies, “he added.
