Denmark warns Russia risks limited NATO attack in coming months

Denmark’s Defence Intelligence Service warned on September 24, 2026, that Russia poses a low but growing risk of carrying out a limited military attack against one or more NATO member states sharing a border with Russia in the coming months. The assessment highlights an expected escalation in hybrid warfare and hostile activities across Western nations, with operations projected to occur more frequently and with potentially greater impact than previously observed.

Intelligence Assessment and Hybrid Warfare Warnings

According to Denmark’s Defence Intelligence Service, Moscow could step up its hostile campaign against NATO allies through a combination of cyber operations and targeted kinetic strikes. Thomas Ahrenkiel, Denmark’s intelligence chief, stated that future escalations might involve long-range missile or drone strikes directed at infrastructure supporting Ukraine.

Ahrenkiel further cautioned that Russia might deploy a limited number of troops into a border region belonging to a NATO member state, potentially framing the incursion as a measure to protect Russian-speaking minorities. The Danish agency characterized a limited military attack as a desperate move that could unfold alongside intensified hybrid actions in the coming months.

Cybersecurity Posture and Domestic Measures

In tandem with the military intelligence warning, the Danish Resilience Agency raised its threat assessment level. The agency cited an increased danger of Russian cyberattacks targeting national infrastructure, prompting heightened security measures across Denmark.

General Alexus Grynkewich, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, noted that a series of recent security incidents underscored an increasingly tense security environment. General Grynkewich affirmed that while the United States will maintain its vital support for the alliance, European member states are expected to shoulder a greater share of responsibility for continental defense.
