Originally from Tahiti, Vetea Ribet has lived in Maui for many years, “about ten kilometers from the place where the first fire took place, one of the only places where they did not evacuate people“. “I see the helicopters all day passing by, with bags of water” says Vetea, while two fires 40 km apart from each other, rage at the same time, on this very touristic area of the island. “Lahaina is Maui’s largest town. The boats burned down, the port burned down, the restaurants burned down, the houses… We can’t go there. […] There are a lot of fires in Maui during the summer and it is very windy. Two days ago, we had winds of 60-80 km/h, because of the cyclone which passed nearby. Everything has been dry for several days. It’s the combination of it all.”
