Dez Bryant cited for assault after Texas traffic altercation

Former Dallas Cowboys star Dez Bryant found himself at the center of an unexpected roadside controversy in Southlake, Texas, after a heated traffic altercation escalated into a police detention involving drawn firearms and a citation for assault, hindustantimes.com reported.

The 37-year-old wide receiver was not arrested during the Sunday incident, but authorities issued him a citation for assault by contact. The confrontation has since sparked intense public attention following the release of chaotic footage showing Bryant lying face-down in a restaurant parking lot with at least one officer pointing a large weapon at him.

From Traffic Light Dispute to Restaurant Parking Lot Confrontation

According to Bryant’s account of the events, the trouble began at a traffic light where he noticed two motorists driving recklessly. The situation intensified as both vehicles cut him off near a local dining establishment. When they all arrived at the restaurant’s parking lot, Bryant confronted one of the drivers regarding their behavior on the road.

The argument quickly turned hostile. Bryant claimed that the individual threatened him, stating he would shoot him. In response, Bryant told the man that if he was going to pull a weapon, he better use it because otherwise, retaliatory action would follow, though he acknowledged the man did not appear to actually be carrying a firearm at that moment. The argument escalated further when the man began recording the interaction on his mobile phone.

“I knocked the phone out of his hand,” Bryant said, explaining his reaction to the recording. Following that physical contact, the man stated he was going to call the police. Bryant welcomed the move, believing he was acting in self-defense and felt he was the victim of threats.

Bryant's Children Witness Police Detaining Their Father

Within minutes, several police officers arrived at the Southlake scene. According to video footage obtained by OutKick, officers drew their firearms and detained the individuals involved. Video captures Bryant lying face-down on the ground with his hands behind his back, repeatedly shouting to the officers that he had been threatened.

si.com reported that Bryant’s daughters and girlfriend had arrived in a separate car just as the situation was unfolding, meaning his young children witnessed their father pinned to the ground at gunpoint. Bryant expressed deep frustration over how the responding officers handled the situation, noting that one officer urged him to “be the bigger person” despite the presence of his children.

“I was really more so concerned about my children, you know, looking at their dad, you know, being on the ground with a gun pointed at me,” Bryant said. He later voiced his concerns publicly in interviews with outlets like FOX News, calling for a thorough and fair investigation into the police response.

Bryant Must Appear in Court Before November 20

While Bryant was permitted to leave the scene after receiving his citation, the incident carries ongoing legal requirements. Authorities scheduled a court appearance for the former NFL star in Southlake to address the assault charge. According to the current schedule, Bryant is required to appear in court before November 20.
