Dinant Criminal Court Case: Man Accused of Assaulting Police and Nurse

2023-12-19 14:07:34

Ten months in prison were requested on Tuesday by the Namur public prosecutor’s office before the Dinant criminal court, against a man prosecuted for hitting four police officers and a nurse on February 7, 2022 in Dinant. He is also accused of contempt and rebellion.

Two police teams went to Dinant station, on the evening of the events around 9:40 p.m., for a fight in which the defendant was involved. Injured and under the influence of alcohol, he was taken to hospital to be examined. But it wasn’t easy. “He insulted the police, including when they tried to put him in the ambulance and when he arrived at the hospital,” explains the Namur prosecutor’s office.

“Disproportionate reaction”

Shortly after, the security service of the Dinant Hospital Center called the police again, because this individual was unmanageable and showed aggression towards many people. When the police arrived, he physically attacked four officers. All were injured and one of them was unable to work for 15 days. A nurse was also kneed in the ribs. “It took 7 people to control it,” adds the Namur prosecutor’s office.

On the basis of a probationary suspension pronounced in May 2023, the Namur public prosecutor’s office requires the absorption of the sentence and requests an additional 10 months in prison. Without a lawyer, the defendant recognizes that his reaction was excessive and agrees to seek treatment for his alcoholism.

The case was continued until February 13, 2024 so that the defendant proves that he complies with the conditions imposed on him last May.
