Tokyo: Japan is a country where fruits are seen as a symbol of luxury. A variety of valuable fruits are available in Japanese markets. Fruits like mangoes, watermelons, grapes, and oranges, which differ in taste and appearance, are grown in a special way in Japan.

Now a new variety has been introduced to this group by the farmers of Hokkaido island in Japan. The name of this new fruit is ‘Lemon Melon’. This round, juicy fruit has a watermelon-like sweetness and a lemon-like tartness.

It looks like a watermelon. But there are no lines outside. The inside is white. At first the inside of the fruit is crispy like a pear. But it softens as it ripens. They are now cultivated in limited quantities by five farmers in Hokkaido.

Research on this fruit, which was developed by combining imported watermelon and lemon, has been going on for the past five years. This year it reached the market after several times of experimental cultivation.

Lemon Melon is one of the remedies to get relief from extreme heat, says Suntory Flowers, the company that developed this fruit. Currently, a lemon melon is priced at ¥3,220 (Rs. 1,843).

White strawberries, square watermelons, decapon citrus, a hybrid of oranges and mandarins, the world’s most expensive grape, the Ruby Roman, and the world’s most expensive Miyazaki mango… Japan’s own line of luxury fruits goes on.
