Discovering Cardiovascular Renal Metabolic Syndrome (CRM): A Comprehensive Guide

American researchers have discovered a new type of heart disease and a third of adults are at risk of developing it, reports the Daily Mail.

Cardiovascular renal metabolic syndrome (CRM) is the intersection of kidney disease, a metabolic disorder such as type 2 diabetes or obesity, and heart disease.

Discovered by theAmerican Heart Association (AHA), CRM is more precisely a new way of thinking about how several health disorders can have an effect on each other.

According to the AHA, one in three American adults has at least three things that put them at high risk of developing this disease.

According to Dr. Chiadi Ndumele, lead author of the CRM study, 90% of adults are on the spectrum of this disease. The high rate of obesity and type 2 diabetes in the United States is the main risk factor for developing CRM.

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 42% of American adults are obese, or more than 37 million people. Added to this figure is the obesity rate among children which reaches 20%.

AHA doctors hope that by defining CRM, people can get a diagnosis and treatment more quickly.

Level 0

No risk factors. These people usually have a balanced diet, a healthy weight and do not smoke.

Level 1

These people may be overweight, with excess abdominal fat. They may have prediabetes. If you are at this level, it is recommended to lose 5% of your mass in order to avoid sliding to the next risk level.

Level 2

At this stage, people will often develop high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. Kidney disease can also be added to the medical picture. Medication may then be prescribed to help reduce blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Level 3

These people generally have asymptomatic heart disease, in addition to high blood pressure and kidney disease. These patients often have heart or diabetes medications and may need to have tests to see if their arteries are blocked.

Level 4

At this level, a patient will experience symptoms of heart disease, in addition to having excess fat, type 2 diabetes or kidney disease. He may have already experienced a heart attack and developed heart failure.
