The idea of eight-legged creatures living on our faces might sound like a scene out of a horror movie, but the microscopic creatures, known as Demodex mites, are very real and are all over our bodies right now.
“Demodex lives in the pores of the face, feeding on the sebum that the skin secretes while you sleep,” said Dr. Scott Walter, a dermatologist. He added, “During its active periods, demodex finds a place inside the pore holes to lay its eggs, and this means the next generation will reproduce from it.” Walter pointed out that this mite is harmless, but lack of attention to hygiene may lead to skin problems such as folliculitis, which may occur due to immunodeficiency.
