Domi Aegerter’s Impressive Debut at Donington Park: Superbike Rookie’s Journey and Race Analysis

2023-07-01 18:58:19

Superbike rookie Domi Aegerter rides the 1000cc at Donington Park for the first time this weekend. After some adverse conditions and the associated little track time, he only finished 18th on Friday’s practice session.

In FP3 he moved up to 12th but lost over 2sec to the top.

The Swiss showed what he really can do in qualifying when he secured the perfect sixth place on the grid. Of course, Aegerter was hurt that he dropped back to 12th place in the race.

“We didn’t have the training time for the race set-up,” analyzed the two-time Supersport champion from Mirko Giansanti’s Yamaha team. “That should not be an excuse, because the conditions were the same for everyone. But the drivers with more experience had a small advantage and could also benefit from their track knowledge.”

Domi continues: «The first laps of the race were okay. I was able to stay in the top 10 and fight for eighth place. But then the grip gradually decreased. It was difficult to maintain a constant pace. I also suffered a little physically, because the 23 laps were very exhausting. In the end I made a mistake when I saw that something on Phillip Öttl’s bike was broken. It was smoking and you could smell it too. That irritated me so much that I braked two meters too late in a curve and was afraid of missing the entrance. That’s why I thundered into the gravel bed. This carelessness cost me two places. I’m sorry, this error is my responsibility. But I feel well prepared for Sunday, even if there is still a lot to do. Hopefully the Superpole race and the second race will take place on a dry track.”
