Dominic Thiem has wrist problems again

Dominic Thiem reappeared on the scene a week after the 2:6, 1:6 defeat against Lukas Neumayer in the second round of the Tennis Challenger tournament in Zadar. The 30-year-old Lichtenwörther gave an insight into the current situation and announced that he wanted to compete at the ATP 250 event in Estoril from April 1st.

At the same time, the former US Open champion explained in a video message why he decided not to compete in Naples. The wrist, which was seriously injured on June 22, 2021, is causing problems again. That may explain the weak performances in Croatia and previously in Szekesfehervar.

“There are a lot of questions in the room, you all should know the truth. After the Australian Open, I started training with my father again. Just like I did when I was young and how I became successful. We have intensified the training,” Thiem reported.

“Unfortunately, before the Challenger in Hungary, my wrist reported again, these clicks appeared again. The strange feeling has returned – coupled with slight pain. Unfortunately, there is now a small inflammation in my wrist. Hopefully I’m on the road to recovery. “I’ve been training this week with a little less volume. I hope I’ll be ready for Estoril,” explained the world number 90.

Julia Grabher, who also had wrist surgery, made her comeback at the Challenger in Antalya. It could have been much more pleasant. The 26-year-old from Vorarlberg didn’t play badly at times, but she missed numerous opportunities after a six and a half month break. The world ranking 111. missed no fewer than five match points in the second set in the 7:5, 5:7, 2:6 against the German Noma Noha Akugue with the score at 5:3. Even at 5:5, Grabher had three break points that she couldn’t convert. That is bitter.
