On the occasion of World Alzheimer’s Day, the bus will tour Vienna from September 21st to 23rd – start of an explanatory video on the topic of dementia

Vienna (OTS) On World Alzheimer’s Day, the Vienna Social Fund (FSW) is launching its “Dementia Bus on Tour” event series. The dementia bus is in use for the second time: from Thursday, September 21st to Saturday, September 23rd, the FSW employees will provide information about care and support offers from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

At the start, FSW managing director Susanne Winkler explains: “With our dementia bus, we are taking the topic of dementia out of the taboo zone and informing those affected and their caregivers about the many options for care and support. Because with dementia, life becomes increasingly challenging – for those affected as well as for their relatives. The topic has been particularly important in nursing and care for years. In order to create more public awareness of the disease, the Vienna Social Fund is touring Vienna with the dementia bus for the second time this year.”

Varied program for all Viennese
In addition to information about the care and support services offered by the employees of the FSW customer service, a varied program is aimed at all Viennese. Peter Willroider, head of department in the nursing and care department at the FSW and representative of the State of Vienna in the national dementia strategy, emphasizes: “The diagnosis of dementia takes a toll not only on those affected, but also on carers and relatives. In addition to information and advice, this year we are focusing on the topics of education, leisure and tolerance.”

Thursday, September 21, 2023 – focus on dementia and education
The first stop of the dementia bus is the technical middle school and polytechnic school Vienna 3: Employees of the FSW education center provide information about training and further education, funding opportunities and the voluntary social year. The aim of this topic is to give students an understanding of the topic of dementia.

Friday, September 22, 2023 – Focus on dementia and leisure time
The dementia bus will be in operation directly in Schönbrunn Zoo on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Zoo visitors can not only find out about the FSW services, but can also take part in a dementia-friendly tour (starts at 12:00 p.m., limited number of participants, registration directly at the dementia bus, prerequisite: valid admission ticket).

Saturday, September 23, 2023 – focus on dementia and tolerance
The three-day tour concludes with the “Saturdance” format of the Brunnenpassage: from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. we invite those interested to take part in “Dancing our rhythms” and enjoy the lively Saturday afternoon.

FSW customer service: information and advice in the middle of Vienna
The FSW customer service is available to Viennese people by telephone 365 days a year, and the FSW advice centers are available for personal appointments. “It’s not just the services for the Viennese that are adapting to new needs and requirements. The way we can reach interested Viennese has also changed: we actively approach people and inform them exactly where they are: in shopping or health centers, at banks or in the outdoor pool in summer. In addition to mobile advice, the dementia bus is now touring Vienna for the second time and is setting a visible example to take the topic of dementia out of the taboo zone,” explains Petra Gottwald, head of FSW customer service.

Dementia explanation video
On World Alzheimer’s Day, the senior representative for the city of Vienna and head of the senior staff unit in the Vienna Social Fund, Sabine Hofer-Gruber, presents the animated explanatory film Dementia. The film thus contributes to destigmatization and enlightenment. Sabine Hofer-Gruber explains the background: “Creating awareness of the concerns and challenges of people with dementia is the prerequisite for a good life with dementia. With the explanatory video we can reach many people at a low threshold and raise people’s awareness of the need to pay attention to their fellow human beings with dementia. It’s about the population dealing with the issue of dementia, understanding the needs of those affected and confronting them openly and without shyness.”

The video will be available from September 21st. online at seniorinnen.wien, at selected events and training courses.
