Dubbing and voiceover artists face the threat of artificial intelligence

Voiceover actors around the world are mobilizing against unregulated use for artificial intelligence (AI) to generate and reproduce human voices, which they fear pose a threat to their livelihoods, according to AFP.

“We’re fighting a very big monster,” said Mexican artist Mario Filho, who dubbed the voice of Hollywood star Will Smith in Star Wars.

Don’t steal our votes

Campaigning under the slogan “Don’t Steal Our Voice,” more than 20 voice acting unions and societies from Europe, the United States and Latin America created the United Artists Alliance, which includes dubbing artists and narrators of commercials, films, audiobooks and video games who fear their voices will be replaced by machines or even Cloned by artificial intelligence without their consent.

According to the group, “the non-discriminatory and unregulated use of AI is a risk that could lead to the extinction of the artistic heritage of creativity and wonder, an asset that machines cannot generate.”

“Our votes are our livelihood,” Karen Gilfrey, vice president of the group, said in a statement last month, adding: “If we don’t have control over how those votes are used, we can’t make a living.”

Voice artists were already competing with text-to-speech technology that converts written words into artificial sound, and now AI poses a new threat to their profession.
