Drought Crisis: How the Lack of Rain is Impacting Belgian Farmers’ Crops

It has been 20 days this Sunday since a single drop of rain fell in our country. Quite the opposite of this beginning of spring when we no longer counted the days when the sky was falling on our heads. Extremes that have serious consequences for our farmers.

In Beauvechain (Walloon Brabant), Joseph took us to his cornfield. We found very dry land there. “It’s brick. There’s not much humidity left”he said.

If we dwell on the readings in Uccle, we have to go back to May 15 to find a little rain and until May 12, for more substantial precipitation.

“For the plant, taking root in an environment like that is difficult”, adds Joseph.

At this time of year, the maize but also the beets should have been more rooted, more developed and therefore more resistant to drought. But due to the spring rainfall which made the land impassable, sowing had to be delayed by several weeks. “We had extremes with a lot of rain, and now nothing. It’s getting stressful in our job,” continues Joseph.

The farmer is worried about all of his crops. Here, the wheat suffers from the lack of water. “The grain will be difficult to form, to fill. We will have small grains and therefore a drop in yield. It is high time to have a little water”concludes Joseph.

Added to this lack of precipitation are rising temperatures. A cocktail of conditions harmful to a whole series of cultures.
