Drunk tourists spent night on Eiffel Tower

Two US tourists secretly spent the night atop the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The two would have entered the landmark late on Sunday evening with a ticket, the broadcaster France Info reported on Tuesday, referring to investigators. Later they would have gone to an area between the second and third floors that is not actually accessible to visitors. Security personnel found the two sleeping there on Monday before the Eiffel Tower opened.

Rescuers from the fire brigade brought the tourists to safety. According to investigators from the Paris public prosecutor’s office, the American tourists were drunk, the broadcaster reported. Since no damage was found, investigations “due to intrusion into a historical or cultural site” were discontinued without penalties.

The operator of the Eiffel Tower wanted to sue the men, however, because the landmark could only open with a one-hour delay due to the recovery of the two on Monday, the broadcaster BFMTV reported. The Eiffel Tower only had to be evacuated on Saturday because of a bomb threat that turned out to be a false alarm.
