The Competition Law was not approved in the third debate this Tuesday, April 30, because there were fewer than 107 deputies in the parliamentary chamber, the minimum number of votes required for approval of that type, parliamentary sources reported.

The non-attendance of the deputies at the plenary session this Tuesday delayed the debate of the initiative contained in the Competition Law, since according to several publications, members of the VAMOS and National Unity of Hope (UNE) groups distanced themselves before get to know that initiative.

In the plenary sessions this Tuesday and at the time of wanting to know about the Competition Law initiative, there were only 102 congressmen in the chamber.

The Board of Directors of Congress planned to move forward with the Competition law this Tuesday, since, according to the president of the Legislature, Nery Ramos, there was consensus between the parties.

Expectations

The Vice Minister of Economy, Antonio Romero, reiterated that, within the Congress of the Republic, initiative 5074 enjoys an important level of consensus, since it is not new and has been discussed for several years, so the level of agreements is “quite encouraging.”

Regarding the phase of discussion of amendments by the deputies, he asserted that minor changes would be expected and not in fundamental elements of the content of the initiative, to seek to make it more refined, robust and appropriate to reality, but above all, that it allows have a competition policy in accordance with best international practices.

Amendments

Prior to reaching this point, initiative 5074, Competition Law, received at least 50 amendments while the Economy Commission of the Congress of the Republic was in the last phase of discussion.

Deputy Jorge Ayala, president of the aforementioned commission, said at that time that the consolidated report was being prepared, but that there were about 50 proposals received and that some articles have more than one.
