Accelerate solutions to combat climate change and activate governments, citizens and businesses to do their part. This is the main proposal for Earth Day 2023, also known as Earth Day, celebrated on the 22nd of April. With the theme “Investing in our planet”, the mobilization draws attention to the need for conscious consumption.

According to Earthday.org, organizer of the environmental movement, Earth Day has more than 150,000 partners in 192 countries, who develop positive actions. In addition, efforts are made to seek bold, creative and innovative solutions, especially in terms of consumption, since this practice directly reflects on the planet’s pollution.

According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the clothing sector is one of the most polluting in terms of carbon dioxide emissions, since the production of clothing generates between 2% and 8% of the volume of emissions. Still in this context, textile dyeing is the biggest polluter of water in the world.

The global program also shows that the average consumption of clothing per person is 60% higher than 15 years ago, given that each piece lasts half as long compared to the past. What’s more, every second the equivalent of a truckload of clothing is discarded or burned.

In view of this, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) emphasizes the need for urgent measures in the face of the world average temperature, which rose 1.1°C above pre-industrial levels. This increases the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.

Such climate change is also reflected in the corporate world. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), these changes will make heat stress more common, leading many workers to various medical conditions. Thus, a global loss of 2% in hours worked is estimated by 2030 due to illness.

For the founder and main executive of the Latin American Quality Institute (LAQI), Daniel Maximilian Da Costa, the call for conscious consumption is not new, however, it has gained more strength in the face of the effects of climate change.

“Today, the different groups linked to a company, including most customers, are not only interested in the delivery of a product or a service, but turn their attention to the entire process, the measures adopted, and whether these are related to in pursuit of sustainability”, he concludes.
