“Effective and Eco-Friendly Biological Treatment for Mosquito Infestations in Annaba”

Biological treatment in the cellars of buildings, having nevertheless shown its effectiveness, has been abandoned in favor of chemical methods which present risks to public health.

One of the priorities of the citizens of the wilaya of Annaba is the environment, which has become polluted and dirty such that it has settled the mosquitoes, which are present all year round.

Worse, the other diptera, vector of malaria and malaria is the tiger mosquito which, too, has marked its presence for several years and even claims victims in a city falsely qualified as the fourth in the country. The roads are not left out as much as the rutted sidewalks, the asphalt adorned with potholes and speed bumps (speed bumps) far from all standards.

This is the observation of the inhabitants of the wilaya, which has become a constant over the years. The cities of Poincaré, La Plaine Ouest, Didouche Mourad, Les Orangers, Bouzered Hocine and others are infested by mosquitoes even in winter.

Throughout the year, the inhabitants suffer from the cohabitation of diptera which find refuge and reproduce in the cellars of the buildings of these cities. “Neither tablet, nor insecticide, nor mosquito net, let alone the fans, have been able to overcome this phenomenon which imposes its presence on the nose and beard of the local authorities in charge of the environment. Our fight against mosquitoes will have been practically in vain.

The skin of our children is permanently pitted by the bites of these harmful critters which often carry diseases”, complain the inhabitants of these cities who affirm, moreover, that they have lost hope in the local authorities, because their problem was never supported.

Moreover, specialists maintain that it is the absence of chemical treatment during the necessary period which is at the origin of the invasion of mosquitoes. Worse still, the insecticides used occasionally are not even effective.

The other flaw is related to the ineffectiveness of the control method and the non-treatment of all the infested points. Biologists think that “Annaba being a marshy city, all the cellars of its buildings are always flooded with water and their emptying is not regular.

Chemical warfare is still required, although it is harmful to public health and its long-term results are incurable diseases”. Ms. Belghiche, a biologist by profession, suggests that there is another type of treatment that can replace it, without harming public health or the environment, and with great efficiency.

It is, according to her, the biological treatment called BTI: Bacillus Thuringiensis subspecies israelensis. “And what is surprising is that this treatment was really carried out at the level of the municipality of Annaba in 2007, for three months from January to March, we treated the cellars of the buildings and stagnant water at the level of the neighborhoods where mosquito larvae live.

This treatment gave good results, ie 100% mortality of larvae in the half-time taken by the chemical treatment. Biodegradable, this treatment has succeeded in clear and waste water, for the latter, it suffices to use the appropriate dosage. But we did not continue to work with this biological treatment”, she regrets. In the meantime, the inhabitants are suffering. In the Cité AADL Safsaf as in the Poincaré buildings, the cellars are full of water… and mosquitoes.

Are we in Annaba or on the edges of the swamps? wonder the inhabitants, making the wali and his mayor totally responsible for the hygiene of the city on the eve of the summer season. “In the end, whether it’s the elected officials of HMS or the FLN at the head of the town hall of Annaba, the mosquitoes are there. They taunt all the mayors who have succeeded at the head of a city formerly described as pretty, ”regret the inhabitants of the city.
