MADRID, 18 (EUROPA PRESS)

The President of Egypt, Abdelfatá al Sisi, has shown his willingness to mediate for an end to the fighting between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and has stressed that the Egyptian troops deployed in the country were on a mission training with the Sudanese forces, separating them from any of the parties in the conflict.

Al Sisi has stated during a meeting of the Supreme Council of the Egyptian Armed Forces that the clashes between the Armed Forces and the RSF are an internal matter of Sudan in which “we must not interfere” so as not to “incite” the differences, although has highlighted the importance of negotiations to resolve tensions, as reported by the Egyptian daily ‘Al Ahram’.

In this sense, he has said that Cairo is willing to play a mediation role between the parties and has asked the parties to accept a negotiation process, while stressing that contacts with the Army and the RSF are “continues” to try to stop the bloodshed and restore stability in the African country.

“Egypt has always maintained through its foreign policy a balanced and moderate position in the affairs of the entire region,” defended the Egyptian president, who has tried to distance Egyptian troops from the conflict. The RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, alias ‘Hemedti’, published a video on Saturday showing Egyptian soldiers detained at the Meroue airport in the north of the country.

After that, the Egyptian Armed Forces indicated that there was “coordination with the parties involved in Sudan to guarantee the safety of the Egyptian troops, who were participating in joint training”, while ‘Hemedti’ himself apologized for the publication of the video and showed willingness to cooperate to send the detainees to the neighboring country.

For his part, the president of Iraq, Abdulatif Rashid, has shown his “sorrow” for the “unfortunate events” in Sudan. “We are confident in the wisdom of the brothers in Sudan and that their capacity for peaceful and democratic dialogue is sufficient to ensure that this crisis will be overcome through an immediate end to the fighting and armed actions,” he said.

The Iraqi president has also revealed Iraq’s willingness to “make efforts and help achieve opportunities for a constructive dialogue” in Baghdad with the aim of “giving priority to the logic of peace and strengthening the democratic path,” according to a statement published by the Presidency of Iraq through his official account on the social network Facebook.

The fighting, which has so far left 185 dead and nearly 1,800 injured, broke out on Saturday in the context of an increase in tensions around the reform of the security apparatus and the integration of the paramilitary force within the Armed Forces. Armed Forces, a key part of an agreement signed in December to form a new civilian government and reactivate the transition.

The talks process began with international mediation after Al Burhan led a coup in October 2021 that overthrew the then unity prime minister, Abdalá Hamdok, appointed to the position as a result of contacts between civilians and the military after the riot of April 2019, which put an end to 30 years of the regime of Omar Hasan al Bashir.
