Four people were killed and 88 others injured when two passenger trains collided in Egypt’s Giza province on November 8, 2026. The crash occurred in the Al-Ayyat district, about 32 miles south of Cairo, when a train traveling from Giza to Fayoum struck the rear of a train heading from Cairo to Aswan, according to the Egyptian Transportation Ministry. The impact caused several carriages to derail, disrupting train services along the route.

Emergency teams responded to the scene, transporting the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. Health ministry officials reported the toll of four deaths and 88 injuries. Over 70 ambulances were deployed to the scene to transport the wounded to hospitals. The bodies of the deceased were transferred to nearby medical facilities.

The incident occurred on a Sunday. Emergency response crews were dispatched to the site immediately following the collision to assist survivors and manage the aftermath. Authorities have deployed heavy equipment to clear the wreckage and restore normal rail operations. The National Railways of Egypt set a goal to quickly restore train services to normal conditions.

The cause of the collision remained under investigation as of the latest reports.

The location of the crash, near the Al-Ayyat district, has a history of rail accidents, including a fatal fire in 2002 that killed over 370 people and multiple collisions in 2009. The crash took place in the same district where a freight train collision injured a driver and his assistant last September.

This accident comes amid concerns about railway safety in Egypt, a country with a large population that relies heavily on rail transport. The Egyptian railway network is one of Africa’s largest, though modernization is needed. Egypt has invested billions of dollars in transportation infrastructure over the past decade, including new highways and high-speed rail lines, but recent accidents have highlighted ongoing safety challenges on its conventional rail network.
