EIU and Charleston Middle School Host Joint Veterans Day Ceremony

Charleston Middle School and Eastern Illinois University are partnering to host a joint Veterans Day program on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2026. The commemorative event will take place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Dvorak Concert Hall, located within the Doudna Fine Arts Center at 1860 7th Street in Charleston.

The ceremony serves as a community-wide tribute to those who have served in the armed forces. Organizers have scheduled a full program that includes the presentation of colors by the EIU ROTC, a performance of the Star-Spangled Banner by the Charleston Middle School (CMS) Choir, and a traditional three-volley salute to honor the sacrifices of military personnel. The event will also feature the playing of Taps and a segment led by a student who will recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

Charleston Middle School students present essay awards and musical performances

The event highlights contributions from Charleston Middle School students. Among the scheduled presentations is the recognition of the winner of the VFW Patriot’s Pen student essay contest. In addition to the choir, the CMS band is set to perform during the hour-long ceremony.

Recognition for local veterans

Veterans attending the ceremony will be seated on stage to be formally recognized for their service. As a gesture of appreciation, each veteran in attendance is scheduled to receive a commemorative challenge coin. To ensure proper arrangements, the university requested that veterans sign up for the event by Nov. 2, 2026, to reserve their space on the stage.

Following the conclusion of the formal program at 10 a.m., a reception will be held in the Doudna Fine Arts Center where refreshments will be served to guests and veterans.
