“The resolution will be low at first, like Nintendo’s early graphics, but may ultimately surpass normal human vision,” Musk says.

Elon Musk has claimed that his company Neuralink can restore sight to monkeys. On this platform “The Blindsight implant already works in monkeys,” he noted this Thursday.

The billionaire also said that this Neuralink product would be called Blindsight, and added that the resolution would be low at first, like “early Nintendo graphics”, but could surpass normal human vision in the future. Musk added that “no monkeys have been killed or seriously injured by a Neuralink device!”

The new product follows the Telepathy from Neuralink, which allows users to control computers with their minds. In January, Musk announced that a patient was recovering well after having a chip implanted in his brain and later said that the patient could move the cursor of a computer mouse with his mind.

On Thursday, Neuralink published a video of the patient, a quadriplegic, playing chess using only mind control. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the company’s first trial in May of last year.

The procedure consists of inserting 64 flexible threads in a part of the brain that controls the intention to move. The threads are so fine that they have to be implanted by a robot. The threads allow the implant to record and transmit brain signals to an application, which decodes how a person decides to move. The implant runs on a battery that can be charged wirelessly.
