Emergence of Tiger Mosquitoes in Belgium: Causes, Threats, and Solutions

The tiger mosquito is a somewhat smaller than normal specimen with its characteristic black and white stripes. It is much more aggressive than our native mosquitoes.

Tiger mosquitoes arrived here a few years ago, imported from Asia with bamboo and car tires, for example. Last year, researchers reported it in different places in Belgium and in particular in Lebbeke, a municipality in eastern Flanders.

Their larvae did not survive the winter until then, but in Lebbeke, the tiger mosquitoes have overwintered and are present again. Biologist at the Institute of Tropical Diseases Isra Deblauw confirms this: “We started a new monitoring this year and we observed that there is a new colony of tiger mosquitoes in the same place. And we found, again, eggs. It means that there was reproduction, this year, exactly at this same place. It’s probably hibernation“.
