Emergency Meeting of Islamic Cooperation: Condemning the Burning of the Holy Qur’an and Urging Collective Measures for Religious Tolerance

Last Sunday, the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation held an emergency meeting at its headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to discuss measures regarding the repercussions of the incident of burning a copy of the Holy Qur’an in Sweden.

The Secretariat warned of “the seriousness of these actions, which undermine mutual respect and harmony between peoples, and contradict international efforts to spread the values ​​of tolerance, moderation, and rejection of extremism.”

The statement urged “the governments of the concerned countries to take effective measures to prevent its recurrence, the need to ensure that everyone exercises the right to freedom of expression in a responsible spirit, and in accordance with relevant international human rights laws and instruments, and the importance of promoting dialogue, understanding and cooperation between religions, cultures and civilizations for peace and harmony in the world.” .

In turn, the Australian Dar Al-Fatwa condemned in the strongest terms the act of a group of extremists to burn a copy of the Holy Qur’an, insult it and trample on it in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, in a repeated scene indicating complicity with these criminals in an attempt to repeatedly and deliberately offend Islamic sanctities and provoke Muslims around the world.

And she stressed that these repeated barbaric abuses cannot in any way be justified or authorized under the pretext of freedom of opinion and expression, stressing that these criminal acts of barbarism will not affect the sanctity of the Holy Qur’an, and it will remain in its perch as a guiding book that guides the values ​​of goodness and truth.

The Australian Dar Al-Fatwa called on the international community to stand up to these criminal acts, and calls for a wide campaign of condemnation, reactions and serious decisive decisions in line with the seriousness and enormity of the act. It also calls for paying attention to the premeditated goals, to the highest levels of awareness and vigilance, to miss the opportunity and thwart the conspiracy behind it.

The Australian Dar Al-Fatwa also commended the honorable position taken by some Islamic countries, government and people, regarding the Swedish violations against the Holy Qur’an, and their summoning of Swedish ambassadors to these countries, and the submission of official protest notes. While it encourages taking such honorable positions, it calls for Islamic and Arab countries to take similar positive positions to express their rejection of these repeated violations and permanent provocations to the masses of Muslims around the world.

Likewise, the head of the Supreme Islamic Commission in occupied Jerusalem and preacher of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, Sheikh Ikrima Sabri, confirmed that burning a copy of the Holy Qur’an in front of a mosque in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, on the first day of Eid al-Adha is “a crime resulting from hatred and intolerance.”

Sheikh Sabri demanded, in a media statement, that those who committed the crime of burning a copy of the Qur’an be held accountable, adding: “The phenomenon of the crime represented in burning the Holy Qur’an has been repeated recently, this Qur’an which is the Qur’an of Muslims that descended from seven heavens to the heart of our Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace. May God bless him and grant him peace, this is the only book in the world that has not undergone any change or addition to it, and it is the Noble Qur’an.”

Sheikh Ikrima Sabri said, “The criminals’ willingness to burn him is a result of hatred and fanaticism,” stressing that “the countries to which these criminals belong should punish them.”

The head of the Supreme Islamic Commission in occupied Jerusalem stressed that what happened had nothing to do with freedom of opinion and action, “rather it was a provocation to the feelings of Muslims and a challenge to Muslims, and Muslims cannot remain silent about these crimes, which have become widespread in Europe in particular.”

The Council for Sharia Research and Studies at the Libyan Dar Al Iftaa also condemned the crime of burning the Holy Qur’an in front of the central mosque in the Swedish capital, Stockholm.

In a statement, the Council considered that an atheist extremist insulting the Holy Qur’an and burning it was a disgraceful act and backward behavior that reflects buried hatred and abhorrent racism with the permission and protection of the Swedish police.

The council said that this abhorrent behavior, which condemns not only this extremist, but also the Swedish government and the police – from which these racist acts against the religion of Muslims have been repeatedly repeated.

The statement demanded; Governments in Islamic countries, by taking firm stances against the State of Sweden, in support of the Holy Qur’an, which is one of the most cherished sanctities of Muslims.

The Council of Sharia Research and Studies also demanded; Presidents and kings of Islamic countries summoned the ambassadors of Sweden; To present official protests to their countries, and to issue decisions to boycott the products of those countries, calling on Muslims to go out in massive demonstrations, in front of the embassies of the world; Supporting their religion, and boycotting Swedish products, considering that this is an obligatory matter, and those who leave it cannot afford it. The statement also urged the media in Islamic countries to play their role in activating this boycott, and to intensify denial of this heinous crime against Muslims.
